Mocksville parishioners restock food pantry shelves

MOCKSVILLE — Members of St. Francis of Assisi Church filled three large containers with canned goods following a food drive last month to benefit the parish’s local Outreach Pantry.

More than 100 parishioners brought donations of canned goods to a Thanksgiving-themed gathering Nov. 20 at the parish hall that included a meal and fellowship.

Their donations restocked the shelves at the Sister Susie Outreach Pantry, named for Mercy Sister Susie Dandison after her retirement, in honor of her legacy of charity – especially her care for the poorest and most vulnerable in the local community.

Along with Mercy Sister Martha Hoyle, Sister Susie played a pivotal role in running a local health clinic and resource center that serves people most in need in Davie County, especially the uninsured. Many parishioners from St. Francis also volunteer at the non-denominational organization, called “Storehouse for Jesus”.

The Sister Susie Outreach Pantry is run by David Taylor, the parish’s business manager, with a group of volunteers.

“The project was the latest of several Acts of Charity our parish has been excited to sponsor this year to help people in need in our community,” Taylor said. “Especially at this time of year, it’s important to give back in gratitude for all that God has blessed us with.”
