CHARLOTTE — Students at Our Lady of the Assumption School recently teamed up to make a difference in the lives of their classmates and kids in the community with a snack drive to benefit the Missionaries of Charity afterschool program.
Over the course of four days in October, more than 70 students brought in boxes and bags of individually wrapped snacks consisting of crackers, cookies, chips, fruit cups, granola bars and muffins.
Organizer Yasmin Santschi explained that the Act of Charity project conducted as part of the 50th anniversary of the diocese “was important to our students because it strikes close to home. Many of our students have been or are currently enrolled in the afterschool program at the Missionaries of Charity house.”
Santschi says the sisters – a cherished part of the Our Lady of Assumption Church and School communities – were overwhelmed with the number of items donated to benefit the children and families they serve.
The students collected a carload of goodies, estimated at more than 2,000 individual snacks.
“I think it’s important that every kid has the opportunity to have something to eat after a long day at school,” said eighth-grader John Nguyen.
Principal Tyler Kulp explained that teaching the students about service aligns with the mission of Our Lady of the Assumption School. “It’s important to us to build relationship with the Missionaries of Charity at all levels: students, faculty, and parents.”
