Refugee youth enjoy summer camp experiences

CHARLOTTE — Refugee students aged 5-18 enjoyed six wonderful weeks of Summer Camp, thanks to a great Youth Program staff, volunteers and donors who funded some of these extra special activities during the diocese’s 50th anniversary year.

They enjoyed roller skating, rock climbing, visiting the North Carolina Zoo and the Carolina Raptor Center, swimming in community pools, going to the York Museum, bowling, riding the coasters at Carowinds, eating pizza at Chuck E. Cheese, touring Belmont Abbey College and Winthrop University, and other fun activities.

The chance to experience new adventures, improve their English skills and build a sense of community made this summer camp, sponsored by Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte, an invaluable experience.

In addition, a big shout-out goes to Charlotte Catholic High School students and advisor Jeremy Kuhn for running two wildly fun and enriching Field Days for our Refugee Youth Program participants.

Charlotte Catholic student Maryanne O’Brien planned two amazing days and scheduled interactive activities that included a water balloon toss, kickball, obstacle courses, tug-of war, wheel barrel racing and other classic Field Day challenges.
